Tu B'Av: Dinner, Movie, and Crafts
Bel Aire Diner

Saturday, July 24, 7:00 p.m.

We are celebrating Tu B'av, the Jewish holiday for love, by coming together for dinner and a movie and some crafting. We’ll be meeting at Bel Aire Diner for their "Dinner and a Movie" series. As a pre-movie activity at 7:00 p.m., we will make woven paper heart cards.

The movie, Sleepless in Seattle, will begin at 8:00 p.m. with a three-course prix fixe dinner ($25, plus service fee). It’s best to buy tickets in advance. They are sold in sets of two. If you are a solo person who wants to attend, please e-mail Jennifer. Please also RSVP to Jennifer if you plan on attending, so we can get an idea of who’s coming.

High Holidays with Malkhut & Queens Jews

We’re collaborating with Malkhut and the Queens Jewish Project for High Holidays this year!  There will be a limited capacity, with registration officially opening in a few weeks. However, we have a few priority registration spots! Please e-mail Chelsea by Friday, July 23 if you’d like to be on this first-come-first-served list.

Malkhut is in need of a Torah leyner (reader) for Yom Kippur afternoon, shofar blowers (especially if you have your own!), ushers to help with the in-person services, and at-home tech support (Zoom hosting). E-mail Chelsea if you'd like to help out!

Finally, expect information about WJOA events on Erev Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 6) and Rosh Hashanah afternoon (Sept. 7).

We will also have the full schedule of events with Malkhut to share with you soon! Send any questions to Chelsea Simon. If you’re looking for s’lichot services, also reach out, and we can go as a group!

We'll meet on Sunday, September 12, at noon for an outside brunch potluck at a private outside covered patio area with chairs and tables in Long Island City, easily accessible by the 7 train.

RSVP to
Jonah for the address and for the potluck signup. If you do not want to do a potluck, you can still come with your own food. Donate Food!

One of our favorite local groups is Astoria Fridges, community fridges that provide free, accessible food to the Astoria community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have an excess of food, donate some to an Astoria Fridge near you (click here for a map of locations).

Astoria Food Pantry is located at 25-82 Steinway Street, and accepts donations (read details here).  As the world reopens and "normalcy" returns, donations to mutual aids have slowed down but their line is longer than it has ever been. In fact, AFP had to send folks away last week. They only have one week of funds remaining. Donate to help them get up to 3 weeks of funding!

If you would like to donate but going in-person presents a barrier, feel free to get in touch with Meredith, who is both a WJOA board member and Astoria Food Pantry volunteer.

Briyah's Backyard Birthday Bash
22-19 77th Street, East Elmhurst, NY 11370

Saturday, July 17, 2:00 p.m.

Join us for WJOA member Briyah’s birthday backyard bash with The Oyven! (Yiddish for oven) Drawing on the Jewish tradition of the communal oven, we will make and knead the dough for pitas and naan, and bake it in our wood-burning mobile pizza oven together with vegetables for homemade spreads. While the dough rises, the afternoon will also feature a live performance by Benji Marx! Then, we will all break bread together. General admission for food is $20, or you can show up for free if you just want to hang out.

This is an outdoor event. Please come to the outdoor space to the left of the building. Happy Birthday, Briyah!
