Ohel Ayalah Offerings

The Famous Four Questions of Passover

Monday, Mar. 22, 7:00 – 7:30 p.m.

The four questions, generally asked by a child, first appear in the Mishnah. But the rabbis of the Gemara change them up. How? Why? What are the answers to these questions?

Donate Your Chametz

Need to get rid of chametz for Passover? Consider donating unexpired food to a nearby community fridge! These fridges are usually run by or are affiliated with local mutual aid entities. Anyone in need of food may visit a fridge at any time, no questions asked nor qualifications necessary. We are lucky to have several across Astoria and you may find your nearest community fridge in the city here. Food that has been opened but is not expired often may be brought to a fridge if it is re-sealed in another manner (ex. transferred to a tupperware container).

Another option is to bring your items to the Astoria Food Pantry (run by the Astoria Mutual Aid Network) at 25-82 Steinway St. More information about how to make a donation is available here. If you would like to donate but going in-person presents a barrier, feel free to get in touch with Meredith, who is both a WJOA board member and Astoria Food Pantry volunteer.

Earlier this month we made cards to give to DOROT. These cards will be sent to seniors for birthdays, various Jewish holidays, or just to say hello. If you missed the group event, but are still interested in making cards at home, here is the info for tips on getting started. Once you have made a set of cards, mail them to the address below, along with the "Cardmaking Project Volunteer Information Form," which you can find on their website here.

Combat Food Insecurity in Our City!

Mayor Bill de Blasio estimates that over 2 million people — roughly a quarter of the city — could be food insecure, according to a recent article by Eater New York, linked here. This article also details a number of ways that you can get involved with local groups to help combat hunger! Check it out and get involved!

One of our favorite local groups is Astoria Fridges, community fridges that provide free, accessible food to the Astoria community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have an excess of food, donate some to an Astoria Fridge near you (click here for a map of locations).
