"Lawn Chair" Shabbat
in Astoria Park, 19th Street and 22nd Drive

Friday, June 25, 7:00 p.m.

It's summer and we're doing Shabbat outdoors this month! Bring your own lawn chair or blanket!

Now that we're back together in-person, we're trying a “Learners Minyan” approach: any folks who want to practice leading for the first time, are feeling rusty after over a year on Zoom, or experienced leaders who want to try out some new tunes can sign to lead as much or as little as you like! If desired, you'll be assigned an experienced WJOA lay leader to work with you beforehand. To RSVP without signing up to lead, or to ask questions, please reach out to Meredith (
[email protected]).

COVID Protocols: Masks are mandatory; we will be physically distancing; there will be no potluck though folks are welcome to bring their own dinner or snacks; attendance is limited to 15 people. In the event of rain, we will meet on Zoom.

Donate Food

One of our favorite local groups is Astoria Fridges, community fridges that provide free, accessible food to the Astoria community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have an excess of food, donate some to an Astoria Fridge near you (click here for a map of locations).

Astoria Food Pantry is located at 25-82 Steinway Street, and accepts donations (read details here).  As the world reopens and "normalcy" returns, donations to mutual aids have slowed down but their line is longer than it has ever been. In fact, AFP had to send folks away last week. They only have one week of funds remaining. Donate to help them get up to 3 weeks of funding!

If you would like to donate but going in-person presents a barrier, feel free to get in touch with Meredith, who is both a WJOA board member and Astoria Food Pantry volunteer.

WJOA Happy Hour Hybrid Hop
Zoom, Instagram, & Astoria's 30th Avenue

Thursday, June 10, 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

As we begin to transition to in-person activities together. We are going to start with this bizarre version of happy hour together. It will definitely be an experiment! You can attend in-person or at home through zoom. You will start out bar/restaurant hopping individually, and through Zoom and Instagram photos find fellow WJOAers along the way on 30th Avenue in Astoria. An ending location is still to be decided, but we will meet-up at 8:30 p.m.

If you are going to be participating only virtually, note that people maybe be popping in and out of the zoom room throughout the evening.

Jennifer is leading this activity, she will share a list of bars and restaurants on 30th Ave and a detailed description on our Facebook page. Keep an eye out for that!

For questions and to RSVP, email Jennifer.
