Trivia Night

Wednesday, January 21, 6:30pm–9:00pm
The Trestle (34-02 Broadway, Astoria)

Please RSVP to Ali by Tuesday morning, January 20, so she can save seats. The WJOA Trivia team will compete at The Trestle on Wednesday, January 21. Happy Hour

Thursday, January 22, 6:30pm
Honey Fitz (30-09 Broadway, Astoria)

Join WJOA for our first Happy Hour of the new year at Honey Fitz, between 30th and 31st Streets on Broadway in Astoria. If you have not been to Honey Fitz yet, embrace this opportunity to see why it's such a neighborhood hit! Let's meet up at 6:30pm so that we can catch their Happy Hour which goes until 7pm. Shabbat

Friday, January 23, 7pm
Mor and Liz's apartment in Astoria

Join us for the next Wandering Jews Shabbat, as Mor and Liz host us at their place. We'll have a Shabbat service followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner. Please RSVP by Wednesday, January 21 to Mor. (Note that space is limited, so RSVP early to reserve a spot.) You'll receive the address and a spreadsheet so you can tell us what vegetarian dishes you will bring for dinner. Book Club

The next WJOA Book Club book will be Lady in the Lake by Laura Lippman (352 pages). We'll meet for a discussion and brunch potluck at location TBD. Come with a question or two if you'd like.   • Birthday cards for seniors
    • In honor of the New Year of Trees, WJOA member Jenna will be leading an event making birthday cards for seniors on Sunday, Feb. 1, 11am at Young Israel of Sunnyside followed by Tu B'Shevat celebrations. RSVP to Jenna if you can make it.
       
  • Central 30s/40s 
    • 30s/40s Shabbat is usually the third Friday of the month, where they go to services at Central at 6pm, and then they have a small area reserved at Draught 55 at 7:30pm. You're always welcome to meet them directly there.

  • WJOA member Eli Steier has a YouTube series of two-minute videos called Whole Heart Torah Fundamentals. You can check it out here. 
    • These short clips are designed to introduce and deepen key Torah concepts such as the significance of the unity of Hashem, Hashem's love for us, and the importance of being wholehearted. 
       
  • Donate to Aid in the Bondi Beach shooting
    • We are devastated by the shooting on Bondi Beach in Australia on December 14. Donate through this GoFundMe to help the people and families affected by this tragedy. 
       
  • Donate to Aid in the Ukraine Crisis
    • In February 2023, WJOA board member Jonah Schrogin volunteered at JCC Krakow, where he packed and sorted food for Ukrainian refugees. If you'd like to contribute to JCC Krakow's Ukraine relief program, here is their Ukraine Appeal. JCC Krakow is a 501(c)(3) organization, so any donations made are tax-deductible. Please write “Ukraine donation via Jonah Schrogin, int vol” in the comment box. 
       
    • Jonah has another fundraiser, this one benefitting GlobalGiving's Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund. This supports more than 80 non-profit organizations on the ground in Ukraine and in the surrounding areas providing humanitarian aid, such as shelter, medical care, food, and clean water. Contribute here, and you can get more information by emailing Jonah, including seeing a recorded presentation.

Christmastime for the Jews

Thursday, December 25, noon
Congregation Sons of Israel (33-21 Crescent St, Astoria)

On Christmas Day, we'll meet at Congregation Sons of Israel in Astoria at noon for a kosher Chinese lunch served buffet style, then we'll walk to Regal UA Kaufman Astoria for a movie. (Avatar 3 will be in theaters.) Join us for just lunch, just the movie, or both. This will be a Bring Your Own Beverage event, and it will be $20 to cover the cost of food.   • Chanukah Concert Outdoors
    • On Sunday, Dec. 21 at 4:30pm, there will be a Chanukah concert outdoors at "Under the 7" at 46th St. in Bliss Plaza. There will be a performance by The Shuk Music Group followed by menorah lighting at 5pm. This event is open to all, and there will be latkes and donuts. This event is sponsored by Young Israel of Sunnyside and UJA Federation. If you have any questions, you can contact WJOA member Jenna.

Board Games at Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden (29-19 24th Ave, Astoria)

Join the Wandering Jews for Board Games at Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden! From Oil to Oil: A Pre-Chanukah Event with Adamah NY and ACI

Thursday, December 11, 7pm–8:30pm
Astoria Center of Israel (27-35 Crescent St, Astoria)

Join WJOA as we partner with Adamah NY and Astoria Center of Israel (ACI) for “From Oil to Oil,” an evening of olive oil tasting and climate reflection in preparation for Chanukah. We’ll savor fair trade olive oil alongside bread, cheese, olives, and other treats while exploring the miracle of the oil. We will use traditional and modern texts to uncover how this ancient Chanukah story offers unexpected insights into our modern relationship with climate and sustainability. Chanukah Happy Hour

Sunday, December 14, 6:30pm–8:30pm
Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden downstairs (29-19 24th Ave, Astoria)

Bring your own menorah and come to the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden downstairs to join WJOA in lighting the candles for the first night of Chanukah. *You are also welcome to attend without bringing a menorah.

Meet-up time is 6:30pm for drinks, dinner, and Chanukah cheer. Top menu choices are Perogies and Potato Pancakes. Check out their menu here. Also going on at the Beer Garden earlier that day is the Astoria Holiday Market, 12–6pm. It's a great place to pick up handmade gifts for the holidays. You can find out more about it here.   • Astoria Holiday Market at Bohemian Hall
    • Sunday, December 7, noon–6pm 
    • Long-time WJOA member Ilana Siegel is participating in the Astoria Holiday Market at Bohemian Hall. Stop by to pick up some Chanukah cards, and other holiday gifts. Check out Ilana's artwork in advance here. 
  • Sharing the Light–An Intergenerational Chanukah Gathering in Western Queens hosted by Malkhut, and co-sponsored by PJ Library and Adamah NY
    • Sunday, December 14, 4pm–6pm
    • Renew Queens (47-20 11th St, LIC)
    • Jennifer Verbit, longtime WJOA board member, will be teaching how to make Chanukah cards that will later be distributed to isolated adults for the holiday season.
