Today is Election Day for the midterm election, and if you haven't already voted early, we encourage you to vote today. Polls in NYC are open 6am to 9pm, and you can find out more, like your poll site and sample ballot, at vote.nyc.

Friendsgiving Shabbat

We are wandering to ACI this month for a Friendsgiving Shabbat service and potluck. RSVP to Brian to let him know that you are coming and to receive the spreadsheet to add what you are bringing. Vaccination required and rapid test within 24 hours highly recommended. Here is the Facebook event.

Book Club Brunch and Discussion

  • Check out a brand new Jewish satire site: From the Desk of the Rebbitzman, brought to you by the husband of WJOA co-founder Rabbi Cassi Kail! This site is filled with songs, lists, Rebbitzermons, and other content which gives a bit more of a tongue in cheek look at Judaism. He was recently featured in the Jewish News Syndicate for some more background information.
  • Donate to Aid in the Ukraine Crisis
    • WJOA member Jonah Schrogin has a fundraiser benefitting GlobalGiving's Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund, which supports more than 80 non-profit organizations on the ground in Ukraine and in the surrounding areas providing humanitarian aid, such as shelter, medical care, food, and clean water. Contribute here, and you can get more information by emailing Jonah, including seeing a presentation.

    • JCC Krakow: Ukraine Crisis Appeal
  • Help with Hurricane Ida Relief
    • Hurricane Ian is one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the United States, landing in Florida and then South Carolina after its deadly sweep across Cuba. The powerful hurricane has caused rising fatalities, catastrophic damage, and mass displacement. Your donation to the Hurricane Ian Relief Fund will provide immediate and long-term relief in affected communities. Donate to GlobalGiving's Hurricane Ian Relief Fund.

High Holy Days with Malkhut

September 25 – October 5

Once again this year, the Wandering Jews of Astoria is partnering with Malkhut for the High Holy Days. Malkhut’s High Holy Day services will take place at CUNY Law School this year. Find the full schedule and register here! Questions? Want to volunteer? Please reach out to Chelsea.

Sukkot Events

October 6 – October 14

All Sukkot activities will take place in the sukkah in Rebecca and Andrew's backyard in Astoria. Once you RSVP for any of these activities you will be given their address and directions to access the sukkah.

Building/Decorating the Sukkah 
Thursday, October 6, 4:00–7:00pm
Has it been a while since you helped build and decorate a sukkah? Here's your chance. Crafting activity still to be decided. We will start at 4:00pm and will continue until sundown. Come when you are able to. For questions and to RSVP, please email Jennifer. Here is the Facebook event.

WJOA Shabbat
Friday, October 14, 7:00pm
Rebecca and Andrew will host our October Shabbat. After abridged services, we'll dine al fresco in their sukkah to celebrate Sukkot and raise a glass to the Jewish New Year. For their address, please RSVP to Rebecca by Wednesday, October 12. There will be a sign-up sheet for what food you can bring (vegetarian only). Here is the Facebook event.

Eating in the Sukkah the Week of October 9th
Rebecca and Andrew invite WJOA members to come enjoy their sukkah this year by picking a day to eat in it. They will not be hosting these meals, so bring your own food and please take your trash with you. If you are interested in eating in the sukkah one of these days during the times listed below, please send an email to Jennifer, and she will confirm with you. Community Meeting with Pizza! (and Survey)

Tuesday, November 1, 6:30–8:30pm
Come meet for pizza and discussion to talk about what you like about the group, what could use improvement, and what you want to see in the future. WJOA will provide pizza, and everyone else can bring snacks, drinks or dessert. This will be a hybrid event indoors and over Zoom. (To attend in person, you must show proof of vaccination.) Community Survey
In anticipation of our annual community meeting, we're asking everyone to fill out a short survey. It takes just a few minutes, and your feedback will be very important as we plan events for the next year. Even if you can't make the meeting, please provide us with your feedback on our current offerings, and suggestions on how we might improve in the next year.

Kabbalat Shabbat Services and Potluck

Friday, September 23, 7:00 pm
Mor and Liz's apartment near Astoria Park


Join us on Friday September 23 at 7:00 pm for Shabbat services and a potluck dinner with Liz and Mor. E-mail Mor to RSVP. You will receive a spreadsheet to sign up for what vegetarian dish you’re bringing. Being fully vaccinated is required, and a rapid test within 24 hours is recommended. High Holy Days with Malkhut

September 25 – October 5

Once again this year, the Wandering Jews of Astoria is partnering with Malkhut for the High Holy Days. Malkhut’s High Holy Day services will take place at CUNY Law School this year. Find the full schedule and register here! 

WJOA will host an Erev Rosh Hashanah dinner at 5:00 pm on Sunday, September 25 at The Shady Lady (34-19 30th Ave) in Astoria. Please RSVP to Chelsea by Friday, September 23. Here is the Facebook event.

Art Reflection Inspiration Cards

Wednesday, September 28, 5:30–8:00 pm
Athens Square Park

Join Jennifer, a WJOA board member, as we partner with Malkhut to come together for a reflective art activity in the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We will brainstorm feelings/ideas that we want to let go of, and through a transformative art project, you will come away with a decorative inspiration card. Materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own as well.
