Rosh Chodesh Women's CircleOn Thursday, August 1 at 7pm, Laura Hemlock will be hosting a Rosh Chodesh Women's Circle to bring in the month of Av. Rosh Chodesh translates to 'the beginning of the month.' We will be exploring the themes of mourning, and transforming from broken to whole. Kayaking in Long Island CityHave you always wanted to try kayaking? Join us in Socrates Sculpture Park at Hallets Cove. (enter at 31-10 Vernon Blvd.) on Sunday, August 4 for free kayaking. You will be able to paddle around the marked protected area monitored by volunteer safety boats. They are open from 1-4pm. We will meet there at 12:30pm to be ready for 1pm. Wear a bathing suit, or something you don't mind getting wet in. Bring a change of clothes, sun hat, sun screen, and water bottle. RSVP to Jennifer so we know to expect you. Astoria Park Cleanup The Wandering Jews of Astoria will joining the Astoria Park Alliance in a park cleanup on Saturday, August 10 from 10am-12 noon. We will be cleaning and beautifying Astoria Park. Specific areas and projects are to be determined. Work clothes and closed toe shoes required. The Park Alliance recommends that volunteers wear sunblock and bug spray. Please bring water, travel light and leave valuables at home. Tools and gloves will be provided. Please RSVP to Jennifer so we know to expect you and we can share details of where to meet. Jewish Museum TourJoin WJOA on Saturday, August 24 at 1pm as our newest Board Member Meredith Nicholson, a Visitor Experience Assistant at the Jewish Museum, will take us on a tour of the "Leonard Cohen: a Crack in Everything" exhibit as well as the revamped permanent collection exhibit which debuted in January 2018. Afterwards, you'll be off on your own adventure to further explore the museum's collection of contemporary art plus Judaica and or take in the music, poetry, and legacy of Leonard Cohen in an interactive, multimedia fashion. Even better: like every Saturday, there's no charge for your visit! Accessibility info: the museum and its exhibits are fully ADA compliant. Lights are dimmed in areas of the Leonard Cohen exhibit which incorporate audiovisual material and each room has benches. The exhibit operates on Saturdays as it does during the rest of the week plus there is a Shabbat elevator. Malkhut's 2019 High Holy DaysThe Wandering Jews of Astoria will be collaborating with Malkhut, Kehillat Tikvah, and Queens Jewish Project for the 2019 High Holy Days. Step into the New Year with us as we gather to rediscover our deepest intentions, to reveal the unique light that shines within each of us and to recommit to showing up and sharing that light with others. We will celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with heart-opening, participatory singing, prayer, meditation and learning. Services are open to all. There's no membership requirement, but we encourage you to sign up on our website later this summer (see the Facebook event here).
