Happy Hour – Goodbye to Sek'end Sun

Tuesday, December 3, 6:30pm–8:30pm
Sek'end Sun (32-11 Broadway, Astoria)

Join WJOA for Happy Hour as we say our tearful goodbye to Sek'end Sun, which closes its doors on Monday, December 9. Ten years is nothing to sneeze at, but it's sad all the same. Tuesdays are Burger + Beer (with bean burgers available) for $10. Please RSVP by Tuesday, December 3 at 5pm to Jonah so we can make a reservation. Here is the Facebook event.

Holiday Craft Fair and Dinner

Sunday, December 8, 6:30pm
Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden (29-19 24th Ave, Astoria)

Who do you need to cross off your list? We will gather for a fun meet-up of holiday shopping and a casual dinner at The Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden downstairs at 6:30pm. There will be a holiday craft fair at the Bohemian Hall called Astoria Market on December 8 and December 15 from noon to 6pm. Long time WJOA member Ilana Siegel will be participating in the Market this year on December 8. Check out her work, here. You are welcome to attend anytime. We will casually meet up at the Market between 5pm and 6pm. We can schmooze from 6pm to 6:30pm, then at 6:30pm we will sit down for dinner downstairs. Here's the menu. Trivia Night

Halsey's (30-95 33rd St, Astoria)

Please RSVP to Laura so she can save seats. The WJOA Trivia team will return to perhaps win another round of drinks at Halsey's. Join us on Thursday, December 12! Book Club Brunch and Discussion

The next Book Club book will be The Sins on Their Bones by Laura Samotin (414 pages). We'll meet for a discussion and brunch potluck at location TBD, with a special guest appearance (virtually) by the author! Here is the link to the book at Astoria Bookshop. Shabbat Services and Potluck

Friday, December 20, 7pm

Join the Wandering Jews for our last Shabbat potluck of the secular year, as Dan hosts us at his place. We'll sing Kabbalat Shabbat and have a vegetarian potluck dinner. Please e-mail Dan to RSVP. Christmukkah – Chinese Dinner and a Movie

Wednesday, December 25, 5pm
Malala Chinese (42-02 30th Ave, Astoria)


This year the first night of Chanukah is December 25, so join us for Christmukkah, as we'll eat Chinese food at Malala Chinese (BOAST: Best of Astoria & LIC winner for Best Chinese Restaurant), then head to Regal UA Kaufman Astoria for a movie. We'll meet at the restaurant at 5pm, then we'll march to the nearby movie theater and watch the movie of your choice. Join us for just dinner, just the movie, or both.   • Central 30s & 40s
    • New group alert!
      Central Synagogue now has a group for those in their 30s and 40s. The group goes to Shabbat services at Central on the third Friday of the month, followed by a bar nearby to schmooze. (They also have other events.) You can sign up here to get on the email list, and the WhatsApp group is linked here.
       
  • Donate to Aid in the Israel-Gaza Crisis 
    • We are heartbroken and devastated by the Israel/Gaza war. You can contribute to GlobalGiving's Israel-Palestine Crisis Relief Fund, which provides emergency relief and long-term support to people in need.
       
  • Donate to Aid in the Ukraine Crisis
    • In February 2023, WJOA board member Jonah Schrogin volunteered at JCC Krakow, where he packed and sorted food for Ukrainian refugees. If you'd like to contribute to JCC Krakow's Ukraine relief program, here is their Ukraine Appeal. JCC Krakow is a 501(c)(3) organization, so any donations made are tax-deductible. Please write “Ukraine donation via Jonah Schrogin, int vol” in the comment box. 
       
    • Jonah has another fundraiser, this one benefitting GlobalGiving's Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund. This supports more than 80 non-profit organizations on the ground in Ukraine and in the surrounding areas providing humanitarian aid, such as shelter, medical care, food, and clean water. Contribute here, and you can get more information by emailing Jonah, including seeing a recorded presentation.
       
  • Donate to Aid Wildfire Survivors in Hawaii
    • Contribute to GlobalGiving's Hawaii Wildfire Relief Fund here. The worst wildfires in Hawaii's history have caused more than 90 deaths, left dozens injured, and reduced towns to ash. Hundreds of people are missing. Strong winds from Hurricane Dora fueled the flames in Maui and the Big Island. Your donation to the Hawaii Wildfire Relief Fund will support wildfire relief and recovery efforts in affected communities.

Friendsgiving Shabbat Potluck at ACI

Join us for a Friendsgiving Shabbat being hosted at the Astoria Center of Israel synagogue with their Young Professionals group. Mark your calendar for Friday, November 22, as we gather for a special autumnal vegetarian potluck dinner. RSVP to Jonah to get the sign-up sheet.

Old Croton Aqueduct Trail Walk

Sunday, November 24, 11:15am–3:30pm
Harlem 125th Street Metro-North Station


Join the Wandering Jews of Astoria for this day trip out of Queens. We will explore a NEW section of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, walking from Irvington to Tarrytown (approximately 3 miles) with the option to extend to Sleepy Hollow's famous Old Style Horseman Bridge (another 2.5–3 miles returning to Phillipse Manor or Tarrytown Metro-North stations). The trail is mostly flat, but unpaved, and accessible by public transportation (Metro-North and Westchester buses) at multiple points, so it is easy to make your own walk shorter or longer.

The group will meet at the Harlem 125th Street Metro-North Station at 11:15am to take the 11:33am train to Irvington. Alternatively, you can get on the same train leaving Grand Central at 11:23am or meet us in Irvington at 12:15pm. We will eat lunch together in Irvington before beginning our walk. Those who head directly back to the city from Tarrytown will return to 125th St between 3pm and 3:30pm; those who continue on to the Horseman Bridge will return to 125th street between 4pm and 5pm. RSVP to Laura if you are interested in joining.       Thanksgiving is almost here, and so is Sigd, an Ethiopian-Jewish holiday marking the fiftieth day after Yom Kippur. Enjoy delicious Ethiopian food and a celebratory Shabbat service as we honor the holiday season with friendship and gratitude. Register here
       
  • Central 30s & 40s
    • New group alert!
      Central Synagogue now has a group for those in their 30s and 40s. The group goes to Shabbat services at Central on the third Friday of the month, followed by a bar nearby to schmooze.   • Donate to Aid in the Israel-Gaza Crisis 
    • We are heartbroken and devastated by the Israel/Gaza war. You can contribute to GlobalGiving's Israel-Palestine Crisis Relief Fund, which provides emergency relief and long-term support to people in need.
       
  • Donate to Aid in the Ukraine Crisis
    • In February 2023, WJOA board member Jonah Schrogin volunteered at JCC Krakow, where he packed and sorted food for Ukrainian refugees. If you'd like to contribute to JCC Krakow's Ukraine relief program, here is their Ukraine Appeal. JCC Krakow is a 501(c)(3) organization, so any donations made are tax-deductible. Please write “Ukraine donation via Jonah Schrogin, int vol” in the comment box.
