Shabbat in the Sukkah

Friday, October 18, 7pm
Rebecca and Andrew's backyard

The Wandering Jews of Astoria returns to Rebecca and Andrew's backyard for Shabbat in the sukkah! Mark your calendar for Friday, October 18 at 7pm, as we gather for abbreviated Shabbat services and an unabbreviated vegetarian potluck dinner. Sand volleyball court by Hunters Point South NYC Ferry (by Center Blvd btwn 54th Ave and Borden Ave)

Come play, or watch, some volleyball on the sand court in Long Island City by the Hunters Point South ferry stop. No experience necessary! RSVP to Jonah by October 24 if you plan to play or watch. After volleyball we may get brunch nearby. Here is the Facebook event.

    • Shabbat Dinner and Service
      Friday, October 25
      6:30 pm | Central Synagogue Pavilion
      As we begin the new year, we come together for a life-affirming Shabbat of reflection and friendship. We’ll hold space to honor the memory of the October 7 attacks and celebrate the warm, vibrant community we’ve built together. REGISTER
       
  • Central 30s & 40s
    • New group alert!
      Central Synagogue now has a group for those in their 30s and 40s. The group goes to Shabbat services at Central on the third Friday of the month, followed by a bar nearby to schmooze. (They also have other events.) You can sign up here to get on the email list, and the WhatsApp group is linked here.
       
  • Donate to Aid in the Israel-Gaza Crisis 
    • We are heartbroken and devastated by the Israel/Gaza war. You can contribute to GlobalGiving's Israel-Palestine Crisis Relief Fund, which provides emergency relief and long-term support to people in need.
       
  • Donate to Aid in the Ukraine Crisis
    • In February 2023, WJOA board member Jonah Schrogin volunteered at JCC Krakow, where he packed and sorted food for Ukrainian refugees. If you'd like to contribute to JCC Krakow's Ukraine relief program, here is their Ukraine Appeal. JCC Krakow is a 501(c)(3) organization, so any donations made are tax-deductible. Please write “Ukraine donation via Jonah Schrogin, int vol” in the comment box. 
       
    • Jonah has another fundraiser, this one benefitting GlobalGiving's Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund. This supports more than 80 non-profit organizations on the ground in Ukraine and in the surrounding areas providing humanitarian aid, such as shelter, medical care, food, and clean water. Contribute here, and you can get more information by emailing Jonah, including seeing a recorded presentation.
       
  • Donate to Aid Wildfire Survivors in Hawaii
    • Contribute to GlobalGiving's Hawaii Wildfire Relief Fund here. The worst wildfires in Hawaii's history have caused more than 90 deaths, left dozens injured, and reduced towns to ash. Hundreds of people are missing. Strong winds from Hurricane Dora fueled the flames in Maui and the Big Island. Your donation to the Hawaii Wildfire Relief Fund will support wildfire relief and recovery efforts in affected communities.

Erev Rosh Hashanah Dinner

Wednesday, October 2, 5pm
Rivercrest (33-15 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria)

Please join the Wandering Jews of Astoria for our annual Erev Rosh Hashanah dinner at a restaurant in Astoria. It will be a chance to connect with others and be with community. We will meet at Rivercrest. Happy Hour goes until 7pm and you can view the menu and drink choices here. Please RSVP to Jonah by Tuesday, 10/1 at 6pm. Here is the Facebook event.

Ultimate at Astoria Park Track

Sunday, October 6, 2:30pm
Astoria Park Track (Astoria Park South and 14th St, Astoria)

WJOA Ultimate is back! Come play a game of Ultimate on inside of the Astoria Park Track (now with astroturf!). No experience necessary, as we will teach the rules of the game (and you can also look them up in advance). Bring clothes to run around in, and cleats or running shoes. You can also come to spectate and cheer if you don't want to play. RSVP to Jonah. We may go out for beverages afterwards. Here is the Facebook event.

Shabbat Services and Potluck

Mor and Liz's apartment

Join us for the next Wandering Jews Shabbat, as Mor and Liz host us at their place as we enjoy the last Shabbat of 5784. We'll have a Shabbat service followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner. Please RSVP by Wednesday, September 25 to Mor. (Note that space is limited, so RSVP early to reserve a spot.)
